Modern Whore asks us to challenge the toxic misconceptions about sex work

Nicole Bazuin and Andrea Werhun are blowing up the stigmas faced by sex workers in their new collaborative doc.

Sex work is the world's oldest profession, and it's also perhaps its most misconceived. Movies in particular have been a problem in this regard, with faulty representations dating back as long as the medium has existed. But Nicole Bazuin and Andrea Werhun are pushing back against that narrative with the audacious and exceptional new film Modern Whore, which is based on Werhun's book about her own experiences as a sex worker.

This collaborative effort (they both wrote and produced the film, while Bazuin directed and Werhun stars) was met with acclaim when it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last fall. That's also when Bazuin and Werhun stopped by the Here & Queer set to chat about both the film and the profession it represents. You watch the episode below, and check out Modern Whore when it embarks on a theatrical roadshow across Canada this spring, before being released on demand on May 1st.
