Nicole Bazuin on How a Years-Long Friendship Led to Modern Whore

My friend told me she'd been working as an escort. Right away, we knew we needed to make art about it.

Fresh out of film school in 2011, I was directing a music video for a local Toronto band with a British Invasion vibe. The idea was to shoot it in a 1960s, black-and-white Super 8 style, complete with two bouncy go-go dancers. I put the call out for bubbly babes, and word travelled to a friend-of-a-friend of mine named Andrea Werhun.

When the pretty brunette arrived on set, I introduced myself as the director and added that I'd be dancing, too — the other go-go was a no-show. Andrea and I giggled and gabbed while applying thick layers of mascara and slipping on our boots. Being around her felt easy, fun and natural.

When the time came, I removed my thick glasses, climbed on a platform, and we go-goed our butts off together, blind to the fact that this was more than a video. It was a meet-cute.
